The Eternal Flame
John 8:12-20
Jesus Christ is the promised “Great Light” and “Glory of the Temple”. He is our eternal Provider, Protector, and Power. He is the Light of the World.
- Jesus spoke to them again: “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.”
- The Promised Light Revealed (8:12)
- He is the Great Light. (8:12a)
- He is the Glory of the Temple. (8:12b)
- He guarantees those who follow Him… (8:12c)
1). will never walk in darkness. (8:12d)
2). will have the light of life. (8:12e)
- So the Pharisees said to him, “You are testifying about yourself. Your testimony is not valid.” 14“Even if I testify about myself,” Jesus replied, “my testimony is true, because I know where I came from and where I’m going. But you don’t know where I come from or where I’m going. 15 You judge by human standards.[a] I judge no one. 16 And if I do judge, my judgment is true, because it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me. 17 Even in your law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true. 18 I am the one who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me.”
- The Pharisees Logic Rebuked (8:13-18)
- Jesus’ testimony is true. (8:14a)
- Jesus’ testimony is trustworthy. (8:14b)
1). The Pharisees examined with flawed judgements; Jesus extended grace and mercy. (8:15)
2). When God executes judgement it’s always just! (8:16)
- Jesus’ testimony is triune. (8:17-18)
19 Then they asked him, “Where is your Father?” “You know neither me nor my Father,” Jesus answered. “If you knew me, you would also know my Father.” 20 He spoke these words by the treasury, while teaching in the temple. But no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.
- The Pharisees Lostness Remained (8:19-20)
- Their pride kept them from God’s Promise. (8:19a)
- Their pride kept them from God’s provisions. (8:19b)
- Their pride left their souls perturbed. (8:20)
