Eyes Closed to Faith; Eyes Opened to Christ
John 9:35-41
Key Point: Faith is not just about physical sight—it is about recognizing and responding to Jesus as Lord. Some will embrace faith, while others will reject it.
35 Jesus heard that they had thrown the man out, and when he found him, he asked, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”[a
36 “Who is he, Sir, that I may believe in him?” he asked.
37 Jesus answered, “You have seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”
- The Call to Faith- Jesus reveals Himself (35-37)
- Jesus seeks out the man.
- Jesus reveals He’s the Son of Man.
38 “I believe, Lord!” he said, and he worshiped him.
- The Confession of Faith– The Man believes. (38)
- The man’s bold confession!
- The man bows down in worship!
39 Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, in order that those who do not see will see and those who do see will become blind.”
40 Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and asked him, “We aren’t blind too, are we?”
41 “If you were blind,” Jesus told them, “You wouldn’t have sin. But now that you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.
- The Consequence of Faith- The Pharisees Reject Christ (39-41)
- Jesus divides those who can see and those who remain blind.
- The Pharisees deny their blindness.
- Jesus declares their sin and blindness remains.
Life Action Steps
- Embrace the Call to Faith – Seek Jesus and Respond (John 9:35-37)
- Ask: Have I fully recognized Jesus as the Son of Man—the Savior and Lord of my life?
- Pray: Invite Jesus to reveal Himself to you anew, asking for the grace to see Him clearly in every area of your life.
- Apply: Seek Jesus daily in prayer, scripture, and fellowship. Be open to unexpected ways He may reveal Himself to you and respond by embracing Him as Lord.
- Confess Your Faith Boldly – Worship Christ as Lord (John 9:38)
- Ask: Am I ashamed to declare Jesus as Lord, or do I boldly worship Him with my life?
- Pray: Ask God to give you the courage to confess your faith openly, just as the blind man boldly declared, “I believe, Lord.”
- Apply: Worship Christ in your daily life, both privately and publicly. Let your words and actions reflect your bold faith in Jesus and commit to sharing your testimony with those around you.
- Recognize the Consequences of Rejecting Christ – Avoid Spiritual Blindness (John 9:39-41)
- Ask: Am I ever in danger of thinking I “see” while rejecting Christ’s work in my life?
- Pray: Ask God for humility to acknowledge any areas of spiritual blindness and for the courage to surrender those areas to Christ.
- Apply: Examine your heart to see if there are any areas of pride, self-righteousness, or complacency that are keeping you from fully embracing Jesus as Lord. Reject any false sense of self-sufficiency, and humbly turn to Christ for healing and salvation.
