The Voice of the Shepherd 

John 10:1-6 

  

Key Point: True followers of Christ recognize and follow the voice of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, while rejecting the voice of impostors.  

 

“Truly I tell you, anyone who doesn’t enter the sheep pen by the gate but climbs in some other way is a thief and a robber. 2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.  

 

  1. The Shepherd’s AuthenticityThe Rightful Leader (10:1-2) 

 

  1. The thief will steal. 
  1. The robber will strike. 
  1. The sovereign Shepherd. 

 

3 The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought all his own outside, he goes ahead of them. The sheep follow him because they know his voice.  

 

  1. The Sheep’s AwarenessResponding to the Voice of Truth. (10: 3-4) 

 

  1. Jesus knows us intimately. His Salvation 
  1. We follow Him instinctivelyHoly Spirit 
  1. We recognize His voice intuitively. Holy Scriptures 

 

 

5 They will never follow a stranger; instead, they will run away from him, because they don’t know the voice of strangers.” 6 Jesus gave them this figure of speech, but they did not understand what he was telling them. 

 

  1. The Sheep’s AvoidanceRejects the Lies of all Impostors. (10: 5-6) 

 

  1. The sheep won’t follow strangers! 
  1. The sheep flee from strangers! 
  1. The Pharisees fail to recognize the True Shepherd. 

 

 

  1. Tune Your Ear to the Shepherd’s Voice (John 10:3-4)
  • Commit to spending time daily in God’s Word and prayer so you can recognize His voice more clearly.
  • Question: Are you filling your mind with truth, or are other voices drowning out the Shepherd?
  1. Trust the Shepherd and Follow Him Fully (John 10:4)
  • Obedience is the mark of true discipleship. If Jesus is leading, are you following without hesitation?
  • Challenge: What’s one area of your life where you need to step out in faith and follow Christ’s direction?
  1. Turn Away from the Voice of Strangers (John 10:5)
  • Reject the lies, distractions, and counterfeit voices that pull you away from Jesus. The enemy is always whispering—will you flee or follow?
  • Self-Check: What voices (culture, sin, fear, doubt) are trying to lead you astray, and how will you silence them?
