Scripture: Psalm 13:5–6 (ESV)

"But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, because he has dealt bountifully with me."

Have you ever prayed about something for so long that you began wondering whether God was listening? Be honest. I know I have and I’m not alone.

David, you know, the man after God’s own heart, understood that feeling to.

In Psalm 13, David cries out to God four times, "How long?" His heart is filled with sorrow. His enemies seem to be winning. And worst of all, God seems absence.

But something remarkable happens as David cries out to the Lord.

David begins the psalm questioning God's apparent absence and ends it singing about God's faithfulness.

What changed?

The Scriptures never tell us that David's circumstances improved. His enemies may still have been present. His troubles may still have been unresolved.

What changed was where David placed his confidence.

Instead of allowing his circumstances to define God's character, David remembered God's steadfast love.

The Hebrew word hesed describes God's loyal, covenant-keeping love. It is a love rooted in His character, not our circumstances.

And nowhere do we see that love more clearly than at the cross of Jesus Christ.

Jesus entered our broken world, experienced suffering, cried out in anguish, and willingly gave His life for our sins. Then He rose again, securing eternal salvation for everyone who believes.

The resurrection doesn't mean Christians will never suffer. Nor does it mean we can simply “faith it away.” It means suffering and death will never have the final word.

This is why lament is such a gracious gift that we have been given.

God doesn't demand that we deny our sorrow. He invites us to bring it to Him.

We can cry and complain. We can ask questions. We can plead for help. And even while we're waiting, we can remember who He is.

Faith doesn't require us to understand everything God is doing. Faith calls us to trust the God who has already demonstrated His love through Jesus Christ.

Do you trust Him in the mess?
